Moving Through Cancer

Couple RunningMoving Through Cancer is a wellness program specifically designed for patients at any stage of cancer care or treatment. This exercise program is closely supervised and the focus is on preventing fatigue, enhancing immune function and regaining or maintaining range of motion, all designed to provide a greater quality of life and lengthen survival.

About Our Moving Through Cancer Program

Our award winning Moving Through Cancer program, developed by Mary Sundland, RN, CES, CLT, emphasizes fitness and health for patients with cancer. During the initial evaluation, you will receive a complete musculoskeletal assessment by a licensed Physical Therapist as well as having a full cardiovascular assessment. Heart rate and blood pressure are checked before exercising by a medical exercise specialist.

This is a personalized program where the first tier of exercises are closely supervised and assigned based on your fatigue level and current lab values. In the second tier, more independence is encouraged and a greater intensity of exercise is tolerated so that you can get back to doing the activities that you enjoy. In addition, attention is devoted to special concerns such as post operation scarring, radiation fibrosis and lymphedema. Your physician is kept informed of your progress at all times. All protocols and contraindications to exercise from your physician are strictly followed.

Why Exercise When I Have Cancer?

  • Current research shows that keeping active at any stage of cancer care helps alleviate fatigue and increases quality and longevity of life.
  • Exercise enhances the immune system by increasing productivity of natural killer cells.
  • Exercise can modify hormones which facilitate tumor growth.
  • Exercise offsets and diminishes the severity of muscle aches and nausea that accompanies some chemo treatments.
  • Exercise can decrease the reoccurrence rate of breast cancer. In a recent study, more than 33% of women who exercised did not experience a reoccurrence of breast cancer versus women who were sedentary.
